He married Barbara L. Hall a year later. The couple had three children. Russell retired from his position as chief of the department of optometry at the Keesler Air Force Base hospital in Mississippi in 1983, and began a woodworking hobby shop. He served on the committee on aging for the Biloxi department of human resources for eight years, and was recognized by the Boy Scouts of America as Scouter of the Year in 1993. He also was active with the Masons and the Methodist Church. In later years, Russell suffered from the effects of diabetes.
