What to Bring

Packing List

If you forget something, Reed’s nonprofit stocks many essential items—snacks, school supplies, and a few things for your room, too. In addition, there are many shopping areas relatively close to Reed. We encourage students to limit what they bring to campus as much as possible.

Reed provides:

  • Bed (extra-long twin)
  • Desk with chair
  • Dresser
  • Bookshelves
  • Overhead light
  • Window coverings
  • Closet or wardrobe
  • Ethernet connection
  • Garbage can

You may want:

  • Bed linens (extra-long twin)
  • Blankets
  • Pillow(s)
  • Mattress pad
  • Shower caddy
  • Earplugs (if you are a light sleeper and have a roommate)
  • Towels
  • Mirror
  • Clothes hangers
  • Desk lamp
  • Pictures and decorations (such as a throw rug, dry-erase board, etc.)—remember, command strips are allowed, but nails are not!
  • Laundry basket or laundry bag
  • Speaker
  • Mini fridge (all residence halls have a communal kitchen and fridge)
  • Floor lamp
  • Plate, silverware, mug
  • Thermometer
  • Fan (it can still be hot here in August and September, so a fan is nice!)

Not allowed:

  • Microwaves
  • Amplifiers for instruments
  • Toasters or Toaster ovens
  • Pets
  • Hazardous materials (firecrackers, white gas and propane, corrosives such as acids and bases, or any chemicals)
  • Candles or incense
  • Personal air conditioning units
  • Weapons (firearms, ammunition, explosive devices, fireworks, or knives not commonly considered “pocket” or “utility” knives)
  • Items with hot plate bottoms (coffee makers or electric tea kettles)
  • Space heaters without automatic shut offs
  • Electric blankets
  • Electric grills
  • Items with heating elements exposed
  • Hot plates
  • Halogen lamps without safety cages
  • String lights

Clothing

Portland weather in summer varies from warm to hot, from the 70s (Fahrenheit) to the low 100s (Fahrenheit). Except for July and August, there is plenty of drizzle; it’s very conducive to studying, with moderate temperatures and occasional snow.

Specific suggestions:

  • Flip-flops and a bathrobe or large towel for walking from your room to the shower
  • Waterproof shoes
  • A coat with a hood
